was recently having some trouble with an XP Pro box. It was freezing all the time at random intervals - on the net mostly. The problem turned out to be a loose connector on the cable modem (hey check this first guys!) but before I found that I was attempting to shuffle PCI cards around a bit and hit the situation where the sound card wouldn't load its drivers anymore - no matter what slot I put it in I found a Device Invalid error.
After a web search found this link:
which is interesting and fixed the problem. I returned and applied the Permissions 'Everyone' to every device branch under the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI
and blow me down but the machine runs better than ever now, so a fix turned into a tweak!
