Is there any reason why hardware from Japan i.e. dvd ram wouldn't work here? I tried to go mad in Japan and get a new gfx card, dvd burner etc. but was told its risky for my system, so I came back empty handed.

there wouldnt be a problem really
the dvd may be set for the japan region 3 but you can usually change that easily enough

Prob with buying over there, is that if it fooks up, you're stuck with a faulty bit of hardware.

I'd rather pay the extra, and know if it dies, I can do something about it.

I thought so too.
When I went to their shops though, they said because our power supply was different and the driver language hardware wouldn't work?

I'm well gutted, they had dvd buners for £200;-)

DVD BURNERS FOR £200!!! you could av used it m8! I'm sure japan is Region 2 same as US. Regeon 1 is for US and canada. The stuff would have worked as well as its just using standard molex connections for 12v. Thats why ya get Switchable psu's with 110 & 240v options.

DVD Burners have come down in price a lot these last few months m8ty, PC world were even selling one for around the £250 quid mark last time time i was in there, bet f you looked around you could get one on line for pretty close to the £200 notes mark now.

Hmmmmm according to their website (PC World) the cheapest one they do is £299 for a vivastar but the one i saw in store was a Philips one so maybe the sites not been updated yet.

£230 at Ebuyer (£270 incl vat) at ebuyer for a Pioneer one.

TBH though this is a classic case where buying from PC world would be a good idea...... these are fairly new technology so things in the next 12 months will move really quickly and products will be updated rapidly.

So if you bought one from PC World and then it went wrong 11 months later (12 month guarantee :)) they wouold replace it with something of the same value cos its very unlikey they would still have the same model in for a direct replacement. :)

I am pretty sure PCW had one in at around the £250 mark though, didnt really look at it much but I remember thinking i had paid double for the one I bought for work a few months ago, will pay a bit more attention if i go in this weekend.

Cheers m8, it makes sense to buy it here rather than mess about with different currents, warranties and stuff.

I didn't think they were that cheap now though, thought they were about £400.

Aye m8ty theyve come down in price an awful lot these last few months, paid close to £500 for one for work not so long ago.

The best part is though that blank DVD proces have started to tumble as ppl switch over to making blank DVD's from blank CD's (processes arent that different apparently) cos there is no money to be made in CD's now.

79pm per disk is cheapest ive seen em so far at this site
http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/SVP_Communications_Recordable_DVD_Discs_16.html

But even ebuyer have spindles of a 100 around the £100 now which considering that disks were at best between £10 and £15 each ! not so long ago is fantastic news :)
