sounds like a bus mastering problem.. ive actually posted above about the agp port. wot card do u have in the slow right next to the agp port?

I dropped XP along time ago now, waiting for the first Service pack b4 trying again.

I had A3D working on it with a combination of the things you mentioned although I did not do any BIOS stuff or Latency fix patches.
I dropped XP because of the NV_DISP4.DLL bug which happened virtually everyday and as far as I am aware is STILL not resolved.


Anyway, nice post Super, good to see someone helping people out here :D

wot u do is hit alt-ctrl-del to bring up the tasks menu

in processes u'll c hl.exe in there.. end the task and u'll b fine

(it happens somethings.. a little annoying but its the price u gotta pay)

unlike 2k xp has its own a3d drivers.. 2k doesnt :(

i got a3d working fine, except the quality is horrible. i turned s_reverb to "0" and it's still terrible with a nasty sounding echo. any ideas on what I should change? if need be, you can contact me on icq or msn and i can show you my config. any help is appreciated.

the config i use comes from the good old kia site http://clik.to/kiaclan :)

wot i have actually done is:

in my autoexec.cfg i set it to exec the s_eax.cfg file..
and once in the game i exec the s_a3d.cfg file.

ive added a little bind to each file.

bind "capslock" "exec s_a3d.cfg" is the in the s_eax.cfg config file and visa versa.. so i can simply hit capslock to swop configs (depending on whether i want it on or not)

i suggest using those configs.. if your still getting quality probs.. pls explain exactly what u mean by 'quality' as the environmental sound obviously isnt as good as a sblive card.. but it should still sound 'good'

the config you gave me the link to fixed the problem perfectly. i have just a generic vortex 2, that always sounded fine in win98/me. what i mean by quality is that it was kind of choppy and static sounding, and there was a weird delay-echo sound to it. thanks for your help :D

FPS drops.... Restarts after playing a game... Sound drops...

Tried w2k and Xp but 98se still roels...

Advise to install XP and 98 together....

XP for programs.... 98 for gamez....

in things like jk2 etc.. mine sits at 90-110

plus ur eyes dont detect anything above 30fps its all in ur mind if u do :P

and i am running a 1.4 :)

erm, at XP hl runs with a3d @ 100FPS ! my monitor runs @ 100Hz ... sometimes the frames drop, but just to max. 90 fps .. :)

you can alwayz give it a go.. however

id recommend downloading the control panel first.. if it gives you an error on startup then you cant do it (you can but the sound will be very bad)

I got mine to work 100% in XP (thanks to superfly)

Here is exactly what I did.

I installed wpcredit, and only added the new WPCRSET.EXE settings http://www.ag-stats.net/files/tom/XP/wprcset.JPG

using http://www.ag-stats.net/files/tom/XP/wpcredit.zip.

Now I installed the vortex XP control panel http://www.ag-stats.net/files/tom/XP/vortex2cpl.exe. In my control panel every single page of it, every thing is UNCHECKED expect for the AC'97 page, this is left on default.

Now I installed my config for XP (98 config doesn't work in XP, it sounds weird) http://www.ag-stats.net/files/tom/XP/mya3d.txt.

Now If you get a fps problem on a nice card, I set my monitor refresh as hig has i could in XP (video card settings in XP control panel) and I went from 60-85 fps to a solid 100 using a refresh of 75 mhz.

I am using a Vortex 2 card, in slot PCI slot 2. Hope this helps every one.

use the program to find out. mine is 0, 11, 0 (whilst the picture shows 0, 9, 0) this is computer (what slot the card is in) specific

then use the creditset program to set the values as explained.. blah blah balh

I got a problem with Xp and xlerate pro with vortex 2 !!!

I followed the instruction guide to use a3d under xp. It runs but now i got a new problem. My volume now is very low. My control pannel is on 100% but I still cant hear any music as loud as with my old soundcard (SB Live 5.1).

Please help me out !!

hey think before you post :P brains dont recognize more then 30fps in tv for example cuz theres MOTION BLUR.if hl had motion blur we could all live happy with 30 fps :P but see if theres no motion blur and so the pc has to compensate with high fps so we dont get this dia-show effect ;)

this maybe true. But play with fps on 30 and fps on 100 and tell me if you see a difference. I see a 10% difference. WIth it at a solid 100 or a solid 90 it is very smooth. When i get 30 fps, it looks very laggy

well i followed that guide of yours in winxp and it works perfectly - i even sortof the same in win2k and it worked even better with loads of better a3d sound quality in CS and WInamp with a3d plugin.

But now i have this problem which happens in both winxp and win2k on occasions, sometimes the sounds the dissapears. and im not talking about any sounds in the game, if sounds dissapears its the sounds Me the character in the game makes, for example in cs my own footsteps just are gone, or my own weapons fire sounds.

It only happens in win2k and in winxp - am i doing something wierd or what. In win98se with 2048 drivers that didnt happen and i would rather die b4 going back 2 win98

any comments?

like i said, i did that guide in win2k, though a little bit diffrent.

1. Most important is u must 1st download the windows2000 compatitiblity update, then to enable it on the game, u must create a link, in the same dir as the exe and choose win95 compatiblity mode (that is if u have sp2 installed otherwise the win98 option should be there)

2. I used the beta win2k drivers from the www.vortexofsound.com website , but i tried the drivers from winxp aswelm the beta drivers works better. But atleast with both my sound quality is better than in winxp, no muffled sounds :)

Well thats the only diffrences i can remember, and oh yeah I installed those a3d 3.12 drivers aswell

but in my opinion, I still like the win98 2050 (not 2048) drivers even more, the geometry just sounds soo kewl

hmm the 3.12 a3d drivers are a vxd type.. 2k and xp are only compatable with wdm type drivers :sigh:

Remember I got A3D running on WinXP Prof, the only thing was a low output volume. Well...
Installed a new MB. (Abit KX333 raid) and the result is:
No A3D Splash audio when HL is started, a3d works but is not stable like on my Abit KT7A raid. I've played a vew and after quite a while (lets say 30 mins.) HL crashes, sometimes earlier.
Any ideas?

No need to increase hl volume. Just make sure ya set mixer volume and wave volume to max in AC97 controll. Also set slider for rear/front sound a bit higher. I found out how i can alter equalizer settings in registry so ya can put in a little more bass ingame.

The Weird thing is when i create a lan game, the 1st noise i make hl crashes. In a regular inet game just now and then.

did u remember to remove/rename the a3dapi.dll file in ur hl dir?

open ur control panel... goto ac97 controls
set all bars to 3-5 (im on 3 atm but its a bit loud, maybe 4 or 5. 8 is the default)
and enable sigmatel st9704 attenuation.
click ok..

restart and see what u think

hi fly, I've got a3d working but I'm getting the sound drops - after a few minutes of play.

Here is my system:

TB1.4
Epox 8k7a+
RAID (which im using, not sure if this will affect the bus mastering?) 2 x 40gig Quantum Fireballs.
gf2 64mb pro

here is my pci setup atm:

PCI1: sb live platinum
PCI2: Asus ISDN card
PCI3: Aureal Vortex 2
PCI4: Nothing
PCI5: 3Com Network card.

Also some of the BIOS options u have mentioned I don't have e.g. PCI latency ...However, I do have PCI Master Bus (options are enabled/disabled). The default is disabled and the system runs fine, when I enable it, I still get sound drops.

Can u offer any assistance?

oh after rereading. those bios 'suggestions' are not related to my xp a3d guide at all. tbh they're kinda misleading and shouldnt be there.

the wpcredit patch should sort all those dropout problems. if not then i would guess that your 2 sound cards are conflicting it

It works ok but the sound quality is no better than my soundblaster eax!
I thought i would hear a lot better in the game, people respawning etc.

I use a Vortex 2 card, WinXP. PCI slot #3. I posted everything I did earlier in the thread. As long as I regulary replace the a3d files in system32 with the ones from cab, im good. 1oo fps. If you want a Vortex 1 card (same card no digital out, aka who gives a ****) I have like 10. Pay for shipping and I'll ship ya one.

I have a 32mb GF2 mx400 gfx card that keeps changing drivers.
my pc runs fairly well but sometimes i shut my comp down for night and when i start her back up theres a quadro 2 driver instead of the gf2 driver i installed.

this has happened with the 23.11, 28.32, & 29.42 nvidia reference drivers on XP

now when go to game through valve shortcut i get no a3d and no sensaura positional audio logo. If i join game via ag shortcut i get the logo and a3d even if joining a valve game.

yeah didnt explain properly.

Everything was ok with both shortcuts until recently. I did update the winmedplayer but I have since system restored to before. Now only the ag shortcut will activate a3d properly.

personally i have both emulated eax and a3d setup on my a3d card..

it autoruns the eax setup.. then when i get into the game i hit my bind and enable a3d.

maybe you could put ur sound setup in a seperate file and just bind a button to exec it?

my a3d config is in my game config bound to F6. But the sound is no longer the same when I go to the valve shortcut, either in game or the absence of this sensaura positional audio logo when I join my first server. I will check if eax 1 is anywhere in autoexec. but since I've not put it there recently and it's stopped working can u think of anythind else.

wpcredit or the latency patch? if you're already using wpcredit then the latency patch will not make a diff.

are you using a3d or are just getting sound drops?

check my guide on www.hlccl.com its a little more complete than this one.. and in the comments ive added a little tip to help stop any sound missing. (normally though as ive got eax and a3d setups on a bind i just disable then reenable it and it seems to sort itself out :))

Done wpcrset for the 40/FF bit on my card which then got me sound in HL with a3d enabled.
Sounds quite different to my WinME version though, no where near as good.
Its missing bits of sounds, odd steps. shot noises from me and others.
I assumed the AGP bus bit needs patching as well so not hogging it .
Will check out the forum article later, I kinda glanced at it but the Links were just text so went back to this forum post.

I got mine to work 100% in XP (thanks to superfly)

Here is exactly what I did.

I installed wpcredit, and only added the new WPCRSET.EXE settings http://www.ag-stats.net/files/tom/XP/wprcset.JPG

using http://www.ag-stats.net/files/tom/XP/wpcredit.zip.

Now I installed the vortex XP control panel http://www.ag-stats.net/files/tom/XP/vortex2cpl.exe. In my control panel every single page of it, every thing is UNCHECKED expect for the AC'97 page, this is left on default.

Now I installed my config for XP (98 config doesn't work in XP, it sounds weird) http://www.ag-stats.net/files/tom/XP/mya3d.txt

Now If you get a fps problem on a nice card, I set my monitor refresh as hig has i could in XP (video card settings in XP control panel) and I went from 60-85 fps to a solid 100 using a refresh of 75 mhz.

I am using a Vortex 2 card, in slot PCI slot 2. Hope this helps every one.

also FYI i had to comment out the s_enable_a3d for mine to work... otherwise i would get no sound in game... anyone know why?

Sorry, I just delete the a3dapi.dll, **** renaming it. I think my config is better than kia's since kia's is made for 98/Me. It sounds al;l f'ed up in XP. By commenting out the s_enable_a3d, your turning off a3d. Try it with out the a3dapi.dll and see if it works now.

after going back to win ME for a while i loaded XP Pro (instead of XP home) on my machine last night and followed the instructions and got a3d working :D

however the only thing is that even with volume on the pc and on my headphones on full it's not very loud... any ideas on this?

ok related to this a friend of mine just got a sq2500 but his machine is on win2k and he won't upgrade in spite of a3d 2.0 not working on it... my question is though... does anyone have a recommended config for a3d 1.0 (which i think does work) under win2k or just use the ones like on the KIA website?

2.also tested the cfg settings if fps drops works great fps when up from 20 to 100 again using supers cfg settings

3.if u cant instale the a3d card att all there are 2 things iw notist
1 is that u mite have integated sound on your motherbord in some case u can just turn it of in BIOS. just dissable it. But some integrated sound dosent mater if u disable it in BIOS it just crash whit the a3d card (LIKE IN MY CASE)the u have to reinstal winxp
same thing if u used sondblaster befour

thats probably why then.

the guide is for a au8830 chipset not 8810.

just stop the wpcredit and remove the register change. then remove hte card drivers and reinstall. should be ok then.

basically.. as i've said hundreds of times, my guide is for 8830 chipsets only, i cannot guarantee it'll work on any other card

Well i havent posted any thing in years : ) but im realy angry on this winxp a3d thingy... I got it working good untill 1 day my windows broke down, and i lost evrything.. when im joining a game.. i get that a3d is enabeled.. but in game i loose all sound, and around 16 fps ore so.. when i push esc 1 time i get 70 ore some.. but sound is gone... ive done the wp credit 100 times.. It works great the first time i lunch the fking game but after this is crashes.. kinda angry atm.. my a3dapi.dll might be a problem.. i extract the new compatible a3dapi file. but after 10 secounds the old file is coming back, kinda lol..version 3.2.674.0 and the compatible file is version 3.3.678.0 .... no mater how many times i extract the file it yust keeps coming back.. realy ****ed up: ) cant be arsed with this, like the xp alot. ive runned dif pci slot but its still the same.. the data field is supposed to run 44 ore FF aint sure atm cuz i dont got the guide infront of me.. but my wpcredit says i got FE ore some.. tried that 2 but wont work.. installed the patch that was on the guide side, but yet a failure.. plz hlp me desperate: P

no you dont. only if you're motherboard has a VIA chipset. in other words.. check if you have a VIA chipset.. if so, reinstall wpcredit.

heh, okey, hmz but i got aureal chipset, but im wondering about something, i loose my sound evry now and then, and evrytime i extract my a3dapi file it "turns back to the old 1 in windows system 32" any1 got the same problem? can u check ure system 32 and paste ure version of the file, would be great help for me. i got the windows 98 config though, but i got the 2 settings that makes my fps not droping. sounds works okey though. Sometimes when i join a game it works great for me, other times it doesent, and i loose my sound.. i think my system32 folder is wierd: P

i've got an msi board and that has an nforce chipset.

check it out for sure before changing hte pci registers as it can cause more probs than you think.

dunno about the a3dapi versions.. wont make a huge amount of difference though.

6. !wpcredit download click here! click there and download the combined wpcredit/wpcrdset zip file. Extract it into your windows dir; it will create a directory named wpcredit. Goto it and run the instdd.exe, restart when it asks. Go back there and run wpcredit, click on the green pci card icon to display the pci register values for your card.. Look for audio controller. you obviously havent read the other faq i wrote saying do not have your config starting a3d when you run the game or it'll crash ;)

you need to have it as a seperate cfg and only enable it once in game.. and disable it before you exit or the menu will crash

forget a3d, instead use your existing eax card and strap your 5.1 speakers to your head. If you place a drawing pin in each tweeter, the subtle pricking sensation will alert you to the direction of the enemies approach.
