I've heard its possible but no idea what I need

My Xbox is now downstairs and the missus isn't happy about me drilling holes in the ceiling and dropping cables through. Already got a wireless router D-Link Di624+ but what do I need for Xbox and has anybody done it?

I don't know of any wireless products that let you plug into a network card, they're all generally network card replacements, pci or pcmcia.

You could fudge it and plug xbox -> small hub -> wireless AP then have you upstairs computer with a wireless card in it. But that only helps if you only have 1 machine upstairs. Otherwise you'll need a hub and wireless AP upstairs as well, with both AP's in bridging mode.

Another solution though is to go to pc world/maplins or any other place that might sell em, and buy some of those plug network cards. You plug it into your mains socket downstairs, and plug another upstairs, or any other socket in the house :) and then you'd just need a short cable from XBOX -> mains socket and upstairs you'd need a cable from mains socket to hub.

In effect your house powersupply becomes a nice long network calbe :)

Not sure how well they work mind.. but they're not that expensive and might be worth a go. If your upstairs/downstairs supplys are on different circuits though, you migth have probs. Best to ask if you can try em out :)

Pav, thats what I was looking at but not sure if it will work with a chipped xbox as its a MS official product.

The mains was another way I looked at but we've got a double socket behind tv and so far tv, video, dvd, xbox and a lamp connected, not sure how well it will work with all that crap plugged in

Upstairs double socket is even work :( 2 pc's ,21" monitor, laptop, tv, dvd, hifi, phone and 3 different chargers

Fortunately, my xbox is situated near the main phone point in my house so I just had a D-link wireless adsl router down there with the x-box plugged in, and a wireless card in my pc upstairs.

xbmc plays divx over an 802.11g wireless connection fine btw ;)

Never managed to get my xbox to see the PC to play films that way so I just FTP them over instead

Anyway its sorted now, I drilled a hole when she wasn't looking and dropped the cable through, but shes not keen on a bright green cable going down a beige wall. Some people are never happy :)

Get the latest version of XBMC (I can ftp it to you if you catch me in the evening).

You just need to set up a share on your PC, then add an entry to your xboxmediacentre.xml, something like :

<bookmark>
<name>Films</name>
<path>SMB://<yourpcname>/<share></path>
</bookmark>

There are plenty of examples in the config file to look at.

It works a treat and the newer version of Xbox Media Centre are astoundingly good bits of software.
