Connect to analog and digital graphics cards with ease (both cables included).

That is part of the review for the Sony latest tft's
Just want to know with my set up/card Ati 9800 pro256 do I use digital or analog, obviously it's for gaming as 1st priority
ta

Not sure wether to get the 17 or 19"
I use 19" crt at mo which would be equivalent to 17" tft
Don't want to **** up my eyes with the large 19" tft (which would be equivalent to 21" crt)
But the 19" response time is 12 against the 17" which is 16

BTW seen the 17 in action in shop displaying the rolling intro for Farcry and not just saying it blew away the other dozen or so TFT's that were on display!
It was so real lifelike 3d!

ta for any help

Boris

usually tfts have a much smaller footprint so you can put them further away from your eyes compensating for the larger viewing area.
General rule of thumb is maximum u can afford.
TFTs are much better for your eyes anyway, as Ive said before surgeon who did my laser eye surgery told me to get one :}

when I got mine it was about 350 I think.
So I really couldnt afford (or want to) spend more on a 19"

TFT's dont dry yah skin or eyes out as much as CRT's either.

I had a mate who had very dry skin and his face was just about falling off when he used a CRT, ok with a TFT though.

JANER
23-11-2004, 03:37 PM
Ta very much Boris and er Dilbs lol I don't suffer from dry skin
I shall go for the 19" tft if its in stock if not they def have the 17"
price diff is 599 euro for 17 and 756 euro for 19

Boris read stacks of reviews on this and it's def the best out there
the latest x-brite technology is the clincher
you got to see this screen to believe it tbh
I wait til friday cos I know guy who works there mite get a few bob off ;)

Hey Janer!

"Tom's Hardware Guide" reviews the 17" version of this TFT - in their opinion it's generally good but they have some problems with screen reflections and some other things. Here's the link for you to read yerself:

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20041123/index.html

JANER
23-11-2004, 04:42 PM
Ta Sfinkta m8 :)
Read the review and by far that is the worse, on one hand he is unhappy but yet on the other he says how good it is lol
I will drop into shop tommorow and try and test the reflective thing he was on about, think it's just getting the yes used to it and as I said b4 in the shop there was over a dozen tft's with the Farcry rolling intro and this one was head and shoulders above the rest.

19" I may go for anyway :D

JANER
23-11-2004, 04:46 PM
yes above should be eyes lol

Badger

For multimedia and gaming use, the Sony monitor is not the best choice

Probably not a good one for you.

The response times were really high for such an expensive monitor :|

JANER
23-11-2004, 04:49 PM
Ya why I might go for the 19" version
that is allegedly 12

JANER
23-11-2004, 04:50 PM
response time that is 12 lol
damn no edit!

Badger
23-11-2004, 04:52 PM
You should completely ignore the manufacturers spec when it comes to response times.
Like with the 17" monitor that is 16ms only for the tiniest of transitions, I doubt the 19" will be any better.

Personally im gonna be buying the Samsung 172x after christmas. Got quite good reviews and looks cool. :D

Who's Afraid Of Ghosts? Not Anymore...
Four words: Bright, sharp, vibrant and fast. With a luminance of 400cd/m2, the SDM-HS94P is as bright as LCDs can get. Depending on your preferences, the monitor comes with three preset lighting levels and a user-definable setting. It's not hard to see how the extra lighting enhances picture quality, literally. With a high contrast ratio of 500:1 and an ultra-fast response time of 12ms, this monitor blazed through our games and DVD tests. Doom 3 looked stunning, with even the minutest of details visible at 1,280 x 1,024 resolution, while the fast response time completely eliminated the ghosting effect commonly associated with rapid image movement.

Depends on the review u read I guess, that Samsung I could'nt fiind here in Dublin too.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding monitor, November 10, 2004

Reviewer: Shawn (Idaho) - See all my reviews
I was a little skeptical about this monitor after reading a few certain reviews. I got it home, turned it on and was amazed. I switched from an old 17" CRT so it was quite a difference. I also use 17" LCDs from Samsung and Viewsonic all day everyday at work. This Sony puts them to shame easily. I wanted to compare the HS94P to the Samsung 193P but no stores had any of the Samsungs. The brightness on this monitor is just to much. But thats easily adjustable without even going into the OSD. One button switches it between high, mid, low and user. With the lights off in the room I have to use it on low and with lights on I use mid. If I was in a work environment that was very lit up I might have to use high. Just some things I've noticed that discouraged me when reading reviews...

The appearance is NOT mirror like at all. It actually looks quite a bit different than the 17" versions which seem to have a glossy bezel.

The monitor does pivot side to side but it doesn't look like it does. The bottom has a ring that rotates.

I've noticed at least a few people saying the blacks are not true enough. For me they are just fine, doesn't bother me one bit. You can tell a difference between a Samsung and a Sony with blacks if they are side by side, otherwise I would never notice.

I wouldn't just go on what they look like in the shop. They always have shit settings and all look pants. Make sure you have a tweak of the settings.

I wouldn't worry about brightness, I've got one of the Hitachi 16ms 17" TFTs, can't remember the ANSI lumens, think it's either 350 or 400. Tbh it's uncomfortable with the brightness at 100%, I usually set it down to 50%.

Was that not superseded by this model

and checking bot the stats the newere model is slightly more imnpressive and it won Tom's award etc

so looks like the 710T over the 710N if I pick Samsung

Badger

The T has DVI which is very very important imo. I'd never use analog.
As far as i'm aware the 17x series are better than the 710s.
It looks a lot nicer aswell and got a good review from tomshardware.
http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20040413/lcd-05.html

They most likely all have the same panel inside anyway.

Badger
24-11-2004, 12:09 PM
Hmm, after reading some more of the reviews on tomshardware it seems the 710T is slightly newer, but it doesnt look nearly as nice (and isnt as thin) as the 172X. Its also more expensive. So i'd still rather get the 172X. But its upto you ofcourse :D

JANER
24-11-2004, 02:39 PM
I took some of your advice, re-read Tom's review on the Sonty went down to shop and could see what he was on about (mirror effect)
So Went round various shops and ordered the 710T
Could have got it from Klompetts but paid a little xtra as shop is 5 mins from me and I am wary about exchanging things online (electrical etc)

Ta for everybodies help and Badger one last thing...............

Badger reading on another site were the Sony handles only 60 with dvi and 75 anologue
Not sure about the Samsung yet but what is the pros and cons using analogue or Dvi cables besides the capping the fps at diff rates? (esp if V-sync is on)
I also heard that tft and crt hz are diff

Would like at least 75 tbh

Boris
24-11-2004, 04:53 PM
DVI cables means much better quality.Theres no contest to be honest.
Its useful having both tho because you can have 2 pcs plugged into one monitor and switch between them (ideal if u have a printer/internet connection server)

I wnat to know more about hz too,
read this and it put my mind to rest a bit as I was worried about a TFT being limited to 60hz
I mean 60hz on a crt hurts my eyes

"Refresh rate doesn't mean anything on an LCD panel. Each pixel on a TFT LCD panel is driven statically regradless of the refresh rate"

Any poing getting 12ms monitor
Well at 16 ms the monitor can do up to 62.5 fps. (1000/16). At 12 ms it can do 83.3... fps. At 25 ms it can do 40 fps. Now if you brain can't tell the difference beyond 60 fps is there any reason to get a 12 ms monitor?
reply
yes because you will get less blur and a faster reaction time. in the tn+film monitors response time is very decivieng (cant spell). the faster the framrate the smoother it will look

JANER
24-11-2004, 07:10 PM
Is this relevant to gamers?
" You will also notice that, unlike CRTs, manufactuers of LCD monitors recommend using a lower refresh rate ; 60 or 70 Hz; The reason for lower refresh rates in LCDs is because the liquid crystal molecules damper flicker and higher refresh rates are not as important."

mid_gen
26-11-2004, 06:52 PM
LCDs don't flicker. CRTs only flicker because you have a electron gun scanning up and down the screen 60 times a second. All an LCD does it switch pixels on and off, no scanning required.

You won't get > 60fps with vsync on with an LCD. I've got used to VSYNC off now, and run at 100fps. You can get higher if you use an analogue connection, but the quality and alignment improvements on DVI far outweigh the refresh.
