Not posted much recently on the old fitness front but that doesnt mean to say that I havent been training, far from it, been getting into running on a weekend and evenings both in the gym and more increasingly out on the roads as the weather imporves.

This was the first race since the near death experience that was Winter Tough guy ;( and thankfully it was a much more pleasent experience. No stomach bug for this event and absolutely no freezing cold water that yah had to swim through made for quite a pleasent run.

Been building my running distances up recently having not really run much at all before and am upto 12 miles for my big Sunday run atm so at 10k (6.2 miles) this race felt like a bit of a sprint......... but running quick has never been my strong point so this felt like more effort than a steadier 12 mile run !

First year they have done this 10k run in Leamington but judging from how quickly all the 750 places were booked up I reckon they will be doing it again.

Starting a race at 9am on a Sunday morning is a bit early for me but I dragged my ass out of bed for it and had just about woken up half way round the course :)

Fairly flat course but with a nice decent long hill in the first half of it to het everyone puffing, half of the course was off road on uneven tracks/bridleways and the rest of it was on the streets, roads and paths around Leamington.

44mins 48seconds was my time which is pretty much what I was aiming for on this one (was aiming to be below 45mins) which placed me 122nd out of the field of 700 runners.

I reckon I should be able to run at least under 43 mins with some more training (43 mins would place me in the top 100 of most of the local 10ks I have seen) and that is the target I have set myself for this year.

Next race is the 10k Castle to Castle in June, maybe thats too soon for a sub 43mins time but I am certainly gonna put some effort in on the training and see if its possible. :)

Aye they dont look like much atm I admit as I have been running/doing cardio rather than doing weights, my main goal is fitness rather than the "Ultimate Body" like some of you monkees are aiming for :)

Can still manage a dozen+ pull ups/chin ups so better than mr average though.

Whats your 10km time Phat ?

My brother is shortly about to do his second London Marathon. Why don't you aim to do the London Marathon for 2006. Will keep your mind focused - and you can do it for charity!

My brother is shortly about to do his second London Marathon. Why don't you aim to do the London Marathon for 2006. Will keep your mind focused - and you can do it for charity!
1. Cos the london marathon is stupidly hard to get into (applied twice before and not got a place) charity places are even few and far between unless yah guarantee to raise quite a lot and I have done a few things for charity last few years so most people are fed up of being tapped up atm.

2. Cos its so popular and you have so many complete novices (people who run it with very little training), groups of people running together etc etc you stand very little chance of a time representative of your ability.

And most importantly

3. The Dublin marathon is in October and I am planning to do that atm :) http://www.dublincitymarathon.ie/

Having said all that I would still like to do London one year cos I reckon its pretty special running with that size of crowd, want to do a few more before I do that one though. Me and my mate at work who also does a lot of running were discussing the other day what we fancied doing in the next couple of years running wise and 2 marathons a year, one in this country and one abroad is what our current plan is and possibly a few different events thrown in there in between such as adventure races or ultra marathons.

I have a mate who does triathlons and she is always trying to get me started on those but my swimming is poor in the extreme atm so that would need quite a bit of work before I fancied one of those.

Tons of stuff out there for anyone interested.

This is a great site for anyone interested in running btw >> http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/

Dilbert

ultra marathons?? :|

Ultra races are events that are over marathon distance, theres no set distance for what they are and they vary massively and in many cases teh ditance is dictated as a result of running from one place to another place .. eg the London to Brigthon Ultra Race that is 55 miles.

Some do start and finish at the same place though, theres one up near me that does laps of Draycote water where I sometimes run and thats a 35 mile race.

One of teh longest ones I have read about in this country is the Grand Union Canal Race ... Birmingham to London following the canal ... all 145 miles of it  !

Doing the 12th Annual Midlands Lung Run a week sunday.Only doing the 5k (thank god) never do any running. This is going to be a real test for me, as I only do light cardio at the gym, and train very heavy on the weights.I def not as fit as i was about a year ago, but i'll do my best. The lads I'm running with are trying for 23 mins or under, not got a clue what pace i'll keep.Doing a trial run this weekend, probably find out that i'll be pretty shite tbh, have to see.

(Dilb's/Phat) do you eat as much carbs as you can the day before you run ?

Yah should maybe have a bit more carbs the day before but on the whole I would say dont change your diet too much the day before you do it tbh m8, if your not used to eating a lot of carbs normally yah could upset your body and do more damage than good..... besides which for a 5km race your only gonna burn about 300-400 extra calories above what yah would use in a normal day so theres no great need.

Making sure your properly hydrated is far more important imo, but not to a point where you need to pee mid race :) I used to try and sip water right uptil the start of the race/events I was doing but I tend to stop drinking about an hour before these days to make sure I arent busting for a p by mid race :) Tis amazing how many people I have seen dashing off into the bushes during some of these events !

Under 23 mins would be a very good time m8ty if your not used to running, owt under 30 mins would be respectable tbh. Even if your quite fit (in terms of good cardio ability) theres nothing the same as getting out there and running. I did loads of cross training when i was losing my flab and could keep going for an hour on teh cross trainer at a decent pace by the end but when I switched to running I found it completely different and could just about manage 1km before stopping !

Been building up slowly since then and longest I have done so far without stopping is 12 miles which I was well chuffed with cos I have never considered myself much of a runner even in my thin and fit teens and keepng going at a decent pace for over an hour and half is a great feeling ..... doubley so when your happy to carry on but have to turn back cos the mrs who is on her bike is too tired to carry on :E

Good luck with it anyway m8, just had a look at their webby and looks like a nice event... would have been interested in doing the 10k myself but yet another wedding next weekend to go to.

don't do long distance, dont think we were designed for it, see so many people with injuries from pounding the tarmac. Nope not for me, prefer the training and results from short distance running 100/200m

Cheers for the support m8, I salute you in your dedication and progress as its not easy as I found out on sunday. I did my first run since school days (painful memories, as i was a fat kid as a child) I was apprehensive as to how i would do.
Although I spend a lot of time in the gym (can give people the wrong perception of fitness), cardio has been a very low priority over the last 7 months, the little I have done is just to keep me ticking over more than anything, as when trying to build muscle, doing too much cardio can stop or even reverse muscle growth.
With out that sounding like an excuse, i set off. I ran through my estate following the road, and headed off down this lane that headed into the countryside at the back I where I live. I drove the course I was going to take in the car to mark out the 3 mile distance. As you get into the country lane, it goes from the flat to a gradual increase in gradient until it meets a rather steep hill at the top, then about a 0.2 mile of flat before I turned around and ran back the same way.
I think I set off way too fast, not knowing what type of pace to take, about 1 mile into the run, i was trying to control my breathing, but was stugling. I had to stop running, and walk at a very fast pace, try and get my composure and go again. This happened on and off all the way to the top of the hill.
Coming down the hill hurt, trying to stop my self running so quickly that i felt that I was going to fall over was funny. I lasted a bit longer running, but was soon back to walking. My girlfriend had been following on her bike and it was her shouting at me in the last bit that kept me running, all the way back to my house.
I did the 3 miles in 30min 28 sec, I was quite pleased for my self. For a first attempt I think thats ok. Felt it afterwards though, ached straight away, only ever feel like that, the day or second day after training my legs in the gym.
Looking forward to the event on sunday, and enjoyed the challenge of the test run, but as i keep saying I don't think i'm built for running. At 14 stone 10 think i'm packing a bit.

Good effort m8ty, I was in even worse shape when I started running last year and dont think I could even manage a mile without having to walk some of it.

I ran and walked my first 10k last year after a month or so of training and got round in under an hour and at that time I think I was close to 15 stone still so theres a target for yah to aim for if yah want one !

Under an hour for your first 10k if your not used to running and aint done much training is a very good effort imo and should place yah near the middle of the field of runners ..... just dont beat yah self up about all the women and old people that will pass you along the way and if you do have to walk a bit then thats not a problem either cos I did that last year and still got round in under an hour.

Tis amazing how quickly yah can increase your cardio capacity though with a bit of training, I remember last year before the castle to castle 10k not being able to run round the course I usually run at home without stopping half way round and walking and that was only 3.5 miles, trained in the gym over winter and then started again running round the course again in the new year and was getting round it fairly easy in one go and before I knew it was going round it twice. Now I am up to doing 10 or 12 miles without stopping and feeling good and ready to do more at the end of it.

Set off on a 15 mile run this weekend and would have done it fairly comfortably if I had given myself enough time to get there before our dinner reservation, instead the mrs had to pick me up after 11.6 miles which was very annoying cos I felt great but my own fauly for setting off late :).

Tis very satisfying looking on a map and looking at where you have run from to though.

Good stuff with the mrs on the bike though m8 ! Thats what me and my mrs have started doing this year and she loves it cos my running pace and distance atm is ideal for her cycling pace and disrtance.

Best of luck with the 10k next weekend !! and make sure someone gets some pics ! :)

Look forward to seeing those m8ty, how did you feel, how did you do on your own time measurement ?

I always time myself as well as using the official timing cos you cant always guarantee that you will be near the start line and if its a big event yah could actually be a few mins before yah get over the actual start time (much longer on things like London Marathon, like 20 mins after start you finally cross teh start line !) so its nice to have a truelly accurate measure of your perfomance.

Good work there Dilbert.

I started losing weight too because I am training my belly muscles like mad - summer is comming! Those sixpack *******s finally start to show slightly. ;)

Currently I aim to lose 2-3 more kilos. That will make 10 kg on the whole that I lost in the last months.

I will start doing some running too - but it's hard to push myself to that.

Sorry never got round to posting last night.

So the day finally came round. Got up on the Sunday morning made sure I was fed and watered for the race. Drove to work and dropped the car off there then walked down with my girlfriend, the team from work, and there family. Was really sunny and warm, not the weather I was looking forward to believe it or not, rather it rained would have made it much easier.
Felt quite nervous before the race, but once I had got their felt much better, made sure went to the loo before the start though.

The 10k were just finishing as we waited around for the start of our race. Once all the 10k runners had cleared the course, they called all 5k runners to the start line. Waited for local mp to babble some crap, then they fired the starting gun, must have taken at least 20 sec to get to the start line, did not matter though, as I was wearing an electronic tag round my ankle, that started my time as I passed a magnetic strip on the start line.

Got off to quite a good pace, running with a m8 from work trying to get some sort of idea of what pace to take. I got over the first hill (2 on the course, one near the start, one at the end) with no problems, but after around 1.5 miles I was finding it harder and harder to control my breathing. My m8 rich who I was running with started to pull away from me as I slowed down. I kept going but I had to drop to fast walking pace. As I said it was really sunny, and that was making me feel really hot. I tried to run again, got a bit further but was soon back to walking pace. One of the girls I work with from the other team that entered caught me up. This made me run again, as I felt I ought to be doing better.
Kept quite a good pace after that, but my legs were starting to hurt, slowed at the first water stop, grabbed a drink, had a bit, spat a bit up, drinking and running don't go. Tipped the rest over my head. Then carried on, girl I was running with had to start walking but I carried on.
Got about 3/4 of the way round and I had to walk again, worst thing was not knowing the course, never knew till I took the last corner how much was left.
Anyhow I kept a fast walking pace until I neared the last corner that climbed uphill to the finish. I started running, as I did not want to be walking past the crowd. Shit that final bit, nearly had me, I was trying so hard to run the last bit uphill, but my legs gave me jogging pace at best. The crowd was cheering as I neared the line and I knew I could not stop, almost felt like been sick as I crossed the line.

I did it in 31min 25 sec, was quite pleased with this, as its around the goal i had set my self, and the run i had done from my estate through the country lane by me was far easier, than the lung run.
Really enjoyed it though, never thought I'd be saying that about running, used to hate it when I was at school as I was fat.The best time from out team was 25min 3 sec, so don't think i've done that bad for a first attempt.

(started writing this reply last week and got pulled off to do somert else)

Great effort Hellspawn m8ty and super report and pics. Considering how late in the day you started your training thats a very repectable time and testament to the effort yah must have put in on the day ! Really pleased yah enjoyed it more than anything as thats what its all about at the end of the day.

I used to think the same about running whilst I was at school and at college, even when I was quite fit doing my Sports Course at college and TA on weekends I was still not much of a runner and certainly didnt really enjoy it and never really did it out of choice.

Even last year when I first started running as part of my new training regime I found it a bit of a chore at the start and only really did it cos I knew I had some running events coming up.

Totally different now though, I love getting out there on a nice long run, doubley so now that the weather is a bit better.

Pushing my distances up at the moment but also working on my speed and am determined to do my first marathon later this year now and although the ultimate goal will be to just finish it I have a secondary goal of a sub 4 hour time for my first one lurking at the back of my mind.

Ran my longest distance to date on Friday night which was 15 miles and although I had a bit of a dogey tummy the first 7 miles were ok, but then started with major stomach and bowel cramps and had to keep stopping to double up for the last 8 miles, struggled home in mucho pain and very pissed off in 2 hours 21 mins.

Was very annoyed afterwards cos I knew I could have done better/felt better if it wasnt for the stomach cramps but that just spurred me on to do another long run this week and so I went out again last night and did 13.4 miles in 1 hour 48 mins which although not terribly quick made me feel much better as I knew I could have gone on for quite a bit longer if time had allowed (mrs was standing at the end of the drive tapping her foot when I got back cos we had tickets for the flicks :)) and probably been a bit fast too if I hadnt been lashed on Saturday night.

Hope yah stick with it and give a few more events a go anyway m8, running is a great way to improve your overall fitness imo. I did a Fitness for Boxing class last week and it was a great class and although some things were hard on me cos it was my first time (deffo not my last) I was still able to keep going at the end when many others had stopped which is due mainly to the fitness and stamina runing has given me.

Well done to all you look like ya putting alot of effort into getting fit, just taken up cycling to shed a few pounds myself as i have just edged over the 15 stone mark , was gonna give running a go but never appealed to me much but looking at what you guy's have done makes me rethink tbh, did you have to change ya diet much?? i have started going to the gym twice a week but mostly for weights not c.v work as i get bored easily on treadmill or bikes in there, should i be doing another 2 nights a week on c.v maybe once on bike and once out running??

Mixture of Weights and CV is best IMO m8ty for all round fitness (although I am doing more CV at the minute as I build up to doing some more 10ks this year and hopefully Dublin marathon in October).

From where I started (at the 20stone mark) my diet has changed beyond recognition but its still not really regimented, just sensible portions eaten often based on how much excercise I am doing and how many calories I am burning with lots of fresh fruit and veg and a variety of stuff from the major food groups with the odd treat along the way. Plenty of water every day as well. One thing thats constant is the porridge (oat so simple golden syrup flavour) that I start every day with now, never thought I would be a fan of porridge but love it love it love it now !

Found a new class at the Gym in the last few weeks that I absolutely loved, Boxing Fitness its called at our gym but its maybe like Boxercise is like at other gyms ... lots of running up an down, pairing up and hitting pads with mitts on, pressups, star jumps, squats etc ...... fantastic upper body and CV workout and one thats in my Diary to do every week from now.

I think i am gonna try and do 4 days all together if i can during the week 2 days weights and 2 days c.v, my diet is not to bad tbh i don't eat alot of crap but my biggest downfall is going to the pub :) problem is i leave the gym with a right thirst on and go right past the pub and i more than often give in to temptation :E
