For the next year up to 6-Nov-2006 MS are offering free downloads of their new visiual studio express 2005 software. C++/C#/J#/VB and SQL Server 2005, can't say fairer than that can you.

You can grab the complete images here
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/install/

Or browse the website to find the smaller web installer that will only install what you want.

Thought I'd stick this in the tech forum rather than general as I know us developers are outgunned in the main forums :)

it's though your university usually.

Basically they sign up for and they provide either cd copy or download of the software via restricted area on their website or directory :)

I get MS stuff through work MSDN subscription. Just downloaded VS 2005 and SQL 2005 and installed. Not actually done anything with them yet, need to start ASP.NET 2 as a project dumped on my lap..... Never done ASP.NET... should be interesting to complete in less than a month :(

Just started working with SQL 2005, I did a 'beta' course at Microsoft in January last year, so I kind of know the ropes, but it's changed a fair bit since then. Integration Services looks quite nice :>
