The tags themselves look OK, but I'm not sure if Google always uses the description tag - sometimes it grabs content from other parts of the site based on what you searched for. Though that doesn't explain why you see nothing...
Make sure that the meta tags are in the 'head' section of the page, and also that you use the 'title' tag as well, before the meta tags. It helps to use relevant text that describes your site properly as well. If your site is dynamic that can changes too.
Search engine optimisation is a black art, but there are lots of guides out there :)

Ahh right , yes - it can take some time to update. Sometimes weeks :( It depends on how soon Google can trawl your site, and on other things like how popular the site is, how many other links point to it etc.
