Want to start running soon, generally to get fitter and lose a little bit of weight (going over the 15st mark is just too much, even though I am quite tall).
What you reckon to these shoes for a good starting pair?
Asics GT-2110 (http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/review/reviewproduct.asp?RPN=614&prod=Asics-GT-2110&RCN=17&rgn=1&v=5&sp=)
According to the guides (mainly the wet foot one) I should wear stability shoes, and I'm sure Asics have been recommended before.
Will probably follow one of the beginner guides from the runners world site (mixing running and walking and building up the running each week until I can run for 30 minutes constant without a break).
Any other recommendations for gear to wear, targets to aim for etc?

Running shoes are different for everyone, just because a pair is good for me and a thousand others, doesn't mean they wolud be good for you.
The general advice (and I'm sure Dilbert will agree), is to visit a local running shop that sells running shoes, they will do tests with you to see what kind of shoes would be best for you according to the way you run.

Probably true, just got to try and find a 'local' running shop, and the time to visit one :(

Except for that one just down the road in Reading  Although their foot scanner thing is broken, useless :D
Just need to find the time now, lol.

Managed to get some shoes and went for my first proper run yesterday :D
Because I can't really remember the last time I did any proper exercise I'm starting from scratch following a basic build up plan from www.runnersworld.co.uk
Plan was to do 1 minute running 1 minute walking x 8. Unfortunately after the 5th run I actually couldn't run any more (23 years of living with smokers and doing no exercise ftw!). So it actually ended up being more like a 5 minute run and 25 minute walk. Not the worst start though, I didn't collapse :D
Will be going again tomorrow and try to manage the full 8 minutes. Although my legs ache quite a lot today, but hopefully that'll go by tomorrow :)

I really started to get back into excercise 3 weeks ago mate. I could barely (and I mean barely) manage 3 miles. And my legs would kill for about 3 days after. But now I can do about 4 miles and although I still think I'm gonna die my legs aren't affected at all. I also play squash for about 1 hour non stop every Sunday. This is very good for conditioning legs.

Good job on going to a proper running shop for the shoes matey, some people can get away with running in anything but for the majority of people an appropriate pair of running shoes suitable for their running style and gait will help to make the running feel more natual and help keep them inury free.
Ive always suffered with my knees in the past when I have run and still do to a certain extent if I try and push my speed and distance up too quickly, but since I started being fitted properly for my shoes and sticking to the guidelines for increasing distance and speed I havent suffered.
Tons of info on runners world, but generally they say no more than 10% increase per week in terms of effort and distance, your body needs to time to react and adapt to your running, as with any exercise and particularly so with running, rest days are very necessary.
You cant really build it up slowly enough but if you push it too quick your body will certainly let you know, usually just as you think everythings going really well .. that was certainly my experience anyway :)

Decided to set a target of 30 mins non stop running within 8 weeks. Will be running 3 times a week, so leaving at least 1 day to rest between each run.
If I hit that target I might look at entering a 5k race and actually start looking at distance/speed.

Did the same route today but with a bit more running, maybe about 7 mins. Took less time and I felt less exhausted after doing it. Need to remember to drink something before running as well. Going for another run on Friday, then hopefully upping the running on Sunday depending on how Friday goes :D
